Happy 60th Israel

Posted by Hippobean at 12:41 PM
60 is not a bad age! If 30 is the age of maturity, then double that time would make you double mature. The Hippo was there in 92, a relatively peaceful time. My romantic idea of being in the Promised Land and walking where the Chosen People had walked didnt shattered when I was there. The landscape was mesmerizing and the very air resonated of a silent deep longing as if the ghosts of the past must be set free. It's a most haunting place, gorgeous, full of feeling. I remember the crisp cool mornings in Jerusalem, the fresh mountain air at the Kibbutz by the Lebanese border, the sucking hot dry air at the Negev. Israel had gone a long way, but the struggle continues and the land will endure. And oh yes, I've placed a stone upon Ben Gurion's slab in the gorgeous Negev, where he and his wife rest side by side, overlooking the road leading to the Promised Land. Happy Birthday Israel!
