Devil's slide

Posted by Hippobean at 5:36 PM
I've never driven through the new Devil's Slide tunnel since it opened. This 1.3 mile stretch of Hi 1 is now closed to traffic and made into a trail for hikers/bikers only. Walking it was a new experience. The coastal view was spectacular. Drving south, a quick stop at the Halfmoon Bay beach looking for starfish at low tide. Lunch at It's Italia. We had 2 pizzas FLOWER MARKET (pears, parma prosciutto, gorgonzola dolci, caramelized onions, extra virgin olive oil) and HALF MOON BAY (artichoke hearts, caramelized onions, shiitake mushrooms, Italian sausage). I love parma prosciutto and gorgonzola, but it being a bit sweet, it was too strong a contrast for me. The artichoke, shiitake and sausage one I liked better but it was more of a normal pizza. We also shared a tiger prawn, mango salad, with avocado. that was really good. We couldnt resist dessert and shared a creme brulee. Afterwards we painted town. Small artisan stores, always a delight to be in this coastal town. Traffic on the way back on Hi 1 wasnt bad until the tunnel. It was totally backed up and it reminded me of the olden days, before the tunnel. Tunnel or not, the traffic on this section of Hi 1 is always bad. It's been a while since I've been down on the coast. The weather was perfect. A very nice day!
